Bone Daddies, Japanese Noodle, (Rock n Roll), ramen bar, Soho, London. UK

Hello again!
 Or (If you are new),
may i wish you a very warm welcome to my Blog!.

WOW!!!
Time has passed very quickly since my last post.

As usual i have been out and about looking around for fine, tasty food.
And today i shall be doing my review of this Japanese Ramen Noodle place right here in London, UK. Called:

Bone Daddies
(Rock n Roll) Ramen Bar.

Location:
Bone Daddies is located in London's Soho Area, on 31 Peter Street, Greater London W1F 0AR
If you require a more detailed directional map: Bone Daddies Directions

Exterior:
This is a nice picture taken of the outside view.
BUT, before you see this view,
you may hear some heavy metal rock music,
one might assume it's coming from a Pub or possibly a nearby Record shop?.
NO!!
It's blasting out from right inside the Bone Daddies Noodle bar!...

Please! Please! do NOT let that put you off from entering.

Interior:
Once inside it's the familiar setting of a noodle bar, with long tables along the walls with bar stools dotted along at regular intervals.
In the centre there are a couple of long tables, again with lots of bar stools...
It was quite busy when i arrived quite early one sunny afternoon (School holidays were still on).
The size is good, not feeling cramped, and it's quite light inside.

Decor:
Along the walls there are shelves which hold extra items if needed, things like a garlic press, jars of garlic, small plates, extra napkins, Oh and large adult style "BIBS" that go over your head to prevent any splash/spillage going on to your lovely clothes.
.
The Waiting Staff:
I feel i MUST mention the overall  look of the waiters, as they did all happen to blend in well with the loud heavy metal music...
Tattoos, Angry style hair and some personal piercings were around.

But again! PLEASE! don't let that effect your decision to come and enjoy your meal,
all of them really are quite warm and friendly...
Some even have a sense of humour when she tripped over the leg of a nearby stool.
(No injuries occurred).

The Menu: Page 1
This is page No 1 of 2, and has all the drinks you could imagine and some extra,
(Mr Sparkle caught my eye), but in the end it was a very hot day so i shall stick with plain old mineral water (I know!...Boo!...Mr Boring!). Perhaps a beer next time?

The Menu: Page 2
There are a nice selection of Ramen dishes, which i like to see, because if one is good it means i have to return on a different day to review the others. ;-)

Today, however i am here solely to consume the Tonkotsu Ramen.
So without further ado...(Let Alex see the Ramen!)...Lets bring on the Bowl...

Tonkotsu Ramen. (With extra Chashu Pork)
Price: £11 + £2 for Extra chashu Pork. Total: £13

This is a very good portion size, That's a good start...
There are a lot of good looking ingredients...Most of the items look like they may have been previously marinated which adds to depth of flavour, even the egg!.

Lets do a taste test....that's why i'm here after all!!

I will start with the broth...lets use the ladle provided.
(Good to see that Soup spoons are not an option)

OOOh!!!...OMG!...You have GOT to come try this Tonkotsu Ramen.
The richness of small distant flavour fills the palette, and the egg style sauce is not SO overpowering as some Ramen's that i have tried in the past.
The noodles were very nicely cooked, and the Pork was very tender.
The marinading of the Bamboo shoots and the Egg really helps empower the dish.

My quest for a good Tonkotsu Ramen is complete...
(Until i find an even better one!).

Dessert:
I did spy with my eye a line of text on the menu earlier, that they did now have their soft ice-cream machine.
I will next time, but as always i am "pushed for time", and decided to just pay for my lovely (very filling) Ramen and head fairly quickly for the "Tube" station.

Service:
Today the service was very good, very polite, and even though it became busy with customers, there were enough staff, and  always someone "buzzing" around and very easy to "catch the eye" if needed.
NoteA small service charge is included in all of the bills.

Personal Rating System:
My personal Taste of the food: 9.9  (Out of 10)
(Might have been 10, but what if there is an even better one in London?)
Price of the food:  9  (Out of 10)
(The drinks menu is overly priced, but the Ramen dishes seem very large bowls, and are very reasonable for the London area).

Conclusion:
Would i dine there again?...........Absolutely!!
(I may not have the Tonkotsu Ramen every time, i may just keep it for special trips,
after all, they do have other Ramen i have not tried yet)

I do hope you can visit Bone Daddies for yourself, and i would be more than happy to hear your thoughts, on your own personal dining experience there.

Note:
Chashu and Char siu are both pork, not to be confused as they are not quite the same. Char siu is usually seen hanging in Chinese markets, and is usually coloured red.
Chashu pork is the Japanese, more marbled, fatty, richer tasting pork typically used in Ramen dishes. And is never coloured red.

Murasaki, Japanese Restaurant, Brighton, East Sussex. UK

Good Evening!
Hello! And a warm welcome to my blog.

This evening i will be reviewing a Japanese style Restaurant called: Murasaki.

MURASAKI

Location:
This Restaurant is located in Dyke Road in Brighton
here is a handy link to a map if needed: Murasaki directions.

Exterior:
From the outside it looks like any normal Restaurant.
The familiar Traditional Japanese Noren, (hanging banner cloths) are on the inside once through the front door.

Interior:
Once inside, it has a very different feeling from the grey exterior. It's fairly compact in size.
It has large amounts of natural light from the roof structure (reminds me of a small conservatory), (during the day), and plenty of spotlights dotted around for a nice evening meal.

Decor:
There certainly is a Japanese interior decorating influence with the low, heavy seats, the use of fairly light coloured wooden items, (which have a very pleasing grain). There are a few pictures hanging around on the walls.

Menu:
Today i am unable to take pictures of the menu.
(I hope to return to the Restaurant and update this at a later date).
In the meantime here is the link to Murasaki official menu file.

Time to order some food.

Before the food arrives we shall have some refreshing Tea.
The Green Tea arrives  £1.35.
Comes in a lovely shaped/looking teapot and handleless mug.

From the large selection of items on the menu, the "Usual" Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Seafood, Bento box, etc are all here. There are always very good Vegetarian options on Japanese menu's.
There are a few dishes that i have not heard of before.
But today i will stick to the ones i have eaten at other Restaurants, and compare the results.

The futo-maki Soft Shell Crab Tempura Sushi  £5.95
They taste good, and there is enough Crab rolled in the thick cut Sushi.
Note: This Sushi is really thick cut.

Next to arrive was the Miso soup.
The Miso Soup  £1.50.
This comes with my Una Jyu (Unagi) served as an additional item.
I was looking forward to this light warming soup, but, today, has someone forgot the spring onions, and the Tofu?.

una jyu  for one: £7.85
for one: A box of crispy anago (saltwater eel) fillet on a bed of steamed rice with
sweet teriyaki sauce served with Miso soup.

Note: I was sure the menu said that the Unagi would be crispy!, it was far from crispy today.
(Perhaps it really was crispy, but the steaming bowl of rice made it otherwise).
Note: Maybe to solve this issue it could come on a separate plate.

Dessert:
We decided to not have any dessert today,
as we were in a hurry to go shopping in central Brighton.
However, if i had had the time, i would have gone for the Tempura Ice Cream.

Conclusion:
Would i return to dine at a later date?...Yes!

Personal Rating System:
My personal rating for the: Taste of the food:  8 and 1/2 (Out of 10).
(Of the dishes that i have tried, all of them were very good).
Price:  8 (Out of 10).
The price of the dishes seem a little high for the portion sizes.

Sushi:

China Garden, Chinese Restaurant, Brighton, East Sussex, UK

Good Evening!.
Welcome to my blog.

Today i shall be reviewing a Chinese Restaurant in Brighton, called:

China Garden

(This Restaurant is well known throughout the Asian community,
as one of the best for their Dim-Sum Menu).

I have recently been to try it out, and this is the story of my personal dining experience.

Location
This Restaurant is located on Preston Street, which is just off the very busy A259 (Kings Road), which runs parallel to the coast of the English Channel Sea.

It is situated on the left side of the A259 (Heading in to Brighton), almost directly across from the old burned down Brighton West Pier.

Outside:
When i was there the building was clad in scaffolding, and the weather was quite bad for taking outdoor pictures. (High gusty winds, and heavy rain). It was difficult to take a picture, so here is a "stock" picture of the outside.

Inside:
The inside of the building is quite a large area, which has a L shape, with a small number of seating facing directly towards the sea. (The majority of seating however, is facing the smaller, (less dramatic), Preston Street). There are also a number of seating options available on their upper floor

This picture was taken of an area upstairs on the upper floor, it shows a typical table setting for lunch time.
The chairs are very comfortable, and offer high back support.

Decor:
There are some nice Chinese style pictures around the "Magnolia" coloured walls, which adds a nice clean feeling to the room, there were also the usual statues of the Chinese Deities and Chinese Gods placed in areas of the Restaurant.

The Menu
(Lunchtime Dim-Sum)

As you can see, the menu is quite extensive, covering most of the usually ordered items, to the more delicacy dishes. Oh! and of course there is a dessert section.

Service:
We were seated upstairs at our table, and although the Restaurant that day was very busy, the service was excellent. It did help that we were seated right next to a servers service station, (A section for cutlery, napkins, chopsticks etc), so a server was never too far away if needed.

Order the Food:
We found it very easy to order the food, we love to stick with 1 or 2 well known dishes, and order various other tasty sounding new dishes.

The Food Arrives:
The Crispy Prawn Dumplings. £3.20

The Crispy "Won-Ton" (Prawn)  around £3

The Seasonal vegetables in garlic (Choi Sum). £5?

The Pastry Cheung Fun £2.80

Well!, half of the food has arrived already. Now would be a good time to check what has arrived, and what dishes are on still their way

There are still 3 dishes to go.

Everyone's favourite, "Ha Kaw" - Steamed King Prawn Dumplings. £3.20

These are the steamed Prawn and Scallop Dumplings £3.20

Last but not least. The Steamed "Shanghi" style Dumplings. £2.70

Oh dear, we have come to the end of the meal.

Dessert:?
Sorry! But, there are no pictures of the Desserts, they were so tasty and gone before i could photograph.
We did manage to order some Desserts, one was the Steamed Lotus Paste Buns. £2.70
And the other one was the Mango Pudding. £2.70

My Son ate the Lotus bun, and he said it was Delicious!!!.
I had the Mango Pudding, and it tasted like real Mango mousse/puree with some single cream on top...Very tasty!

Conclusion:
Would i dine there again?......Oh yes!

Personal Rating System:
My personal rating for: Taste of the food: 9 (Out of 10)
All of the dishes tasted great during our visit, portion size was good,
and all of them were well made and full of flavour.
Value for money: Price: 9 (Out of 10)
It would be very easy to dine here on a "shoestring" budget, and leave contented.

Thank you!...

China Palace, Chinese Restaurant, Worthing, West Sussex. UK

Hello!.
 Welcome to my blog.
Today i shall be reviewing a Chinese Restaurant in Worthing, West Sussex.
The Restaurant is called:

China Palace

(This Chinese Restaurant is situated in Chapel Road, which is very close to the town centre).
Today i am going to visit for some Dim-Sum.

Entrance:
Once through the street entrance, your greeted by the lift, or the stairs, which lead to the first floor of the China Palace, where the main dining Restaurant is situated.
Inside the lift there are 2 options, option 1 is going up to the 1st level, and option 2 to the 2nd level up to their evening "Buffet" style dining room.

Interior/Decor:
When you first enter the main dining room, the decor looks very Chinese with the Dragon murals around the walls, with the red sails of ships on the other walls.
There are many ornate carved chairs around the white cloth covered tables.
(The colours around the room are predominantly black, red, and gold).

There are large carved Lions at the bottom of a stairway, (which leads past a large statue of a Goddess), on the way to their upper floor Buffet dining room.

The Staff:
I think the staff deserve a mention at this point, as there looks like there would be enough, and all of them are very friendly.
(All are Chinese, which is reassuring)

The table layout:
This is the layout for the "Dim-Sum" menu, there is also a small vase with Carnation type flowers.
The layout for the "A la Carte" menu is slightly different as it has a white (fan style) folded cloth napkin.

Tea:
It is quite traditional to have some tea, when having a Chinese meal.
There are a few options to choose, and i have gone for some Jasmine.
(Here is some info on Chinese tea culture, if you wish).

So enough talking, lets begin to look at some of the Menu options.

The Dim-Sum Menu:
The prices are a good range, none of the dishes are expensive, and this gives the option to experiment with different food groups. (which one might not otherwise try if they were more costly).
The usual suspects are there, such as the Ha Kau, and the Shumai.

Lets order some food!.

Here come the Ha kau, (Har gow) King prawn dumplings. £3.30
These are always very tasty, and as an option, they can be dipped in a little side dish of Soy sauce.

Today's vegetable on offer is Choi sum (Chinese cabbage), £8.50
sometimes they may have Kai-lan.
Today it is very fresh and tasty, other days the quality declines slightly.

Here is the Fried Ho-Fun with Beef and Beansprouts. £8.50
There is more than enough for 3 people sharing, when also having other items.
The price is fair for the size of portion. (Could be used as a main meal for 1 person).

Dessert:
Today i shall pass on the dessert option, but i have been before and tried the Sweet Black Sesame Dumplings. £2.80
(These take a few minutes to arrive after ordering)
They are warm and delicious, with a nutty taste and a grainy texture. (I do Recommend)

Service:
Service was first class, very quick to appear, and very attentive,
and swiftly removing any empty bowls and plates etc with a smile.

Personal Rating System:
Personal taste of the food: 9  (Out of 10)
The food today was really tasty, however, i have been before and the standard of dishes did slip slightly, so it may depend on which day one goes.
Price: 9 (Out of 10)
It would be possible to dine here on a very tight budget, and the portions are large enough.

Conclusion:
Would i dine there again?...Yes i would, but not every day.

Note:
They do have a "Buffet" style dining room, which opens in the evening on the top floor, as i have not yet tried, i have not included it in my review.
Nor have i tried their A la Carte menu.

If you do get the chance to try China Palace for yourself, Please feel free to let me know how your dining experience went.

Bill's. Restaurant, Chichester, West Sussex, UK

Good Morning!
Welcome to another of my world famous (not yet!), blogs.

Today i shall be reviewing another Restaurant in West Sussex.
This one is in Chichester again and it is simply called Bill's.

BILL'S

Location:
If you are familiar with Chichester, then you would probably know where this one is, if you are not, please allow me just a brief description for those less so.

Situated in North Street, in the 200 year old ButterMarket building.
(The Butter Market in North Street was built in 1808 by John Nash to provide accommodation for small traders who had previously traded at the town's Market Cross).

Once inside this building, Bill's is situated on the upper floor, on the left side. There is a choice of a few stairs up to the second floor, or if needed, there is a suitable lift provided.
(This is an extremely slow lift, the kids will love it!)

Bill's Restaurant Signage and a copy of their displayed Menu Postings.

As you can see, they also cater for Breakfast, a "Tea Room" Style, and a "Specials" dish of the day, Menu.

The Interior:
Inside the Restaurant it has a very welcoming feel, as it has a very high natural light level (large velux style ceiling windows), the use of old style antique style mirrors, pictures, and furniture around adds a nice touch. The addition of old farmhouse wooden beams (with the usual hanging "strings" of sausages, garlic, chillies, and onions all adds to the feeling of old and new "Fusion!" some might say.

Seating:
There are a lot of seating areas around, and although the space looks large the actual gaps between each table setting is quite narrow, and some might struggle for suitable access (on busy days), with Wheelchairs and baby buggy's.

The Kids Menu.
(The price of the breakfast items seems too high, but, the main courses for £5.95 sounds reasonable,
again though, this depends upon portion size and the list of ingredients used)

Next we find the "Specials" menu, and also the Main menu.
(There are a good range of dishes, not too many, and they do not seem overly complicated).
However, i do see an Asian dish, some Mediterranean dishes, American, and French influenced dishes.
I do hope they are good at cooking all of them equally well.

The Menu Conclusion:
Overall, there is a nice choice of items on the menu, although, the prices seem a little too high for the main courses.
(If the portion sizes are quite large, then all should be OK).

Time to order some food, i'm becoming hungry reading.

The Food:

This is the hamburger, with lettuce and tomato in a sesame seed bun, with fries.

(From the kids menu £5.95. The ice-cream will come later for dessert).
The portion size is good for kids, (there is no plate), and i am reliably informed that the hamburger indeed tasted great.

Now comes my "Special menu" item, the Catalan sausage, and butter bean stew with Chorizo, basil and sour bread dough. £12.95

(The portion size is disappointing, much smaller than expected for the price, such a really nice idea with the presentation in the smart little pot).

Oh dear!.
The butter bean stew tasted very plain indeed, and the Chorizo tasted like the one i could get from my local supermarket (that one tastes sour).
I have tasted real authentic Chorizo before and i am able to source a very good one from a local specialty Spanish supplier for my cooking at home, (i wonder why Bill's couldn't do the same!).

Dessert:
The ice-cream for the kids menu arrives.
Before i could even take a picture of the bowl with the ice-cream in, it is being consumed.
(It must have been very good! It was probably Vanilla, his favourite).

The prices on some of these menu items are very high for this area.

Merchandising:
I shall not require any of these items today, however, they may appeal to someone else.

Service:
On the day we arrived it was quite busy and the overall service was fairly poor.
(We had to attract passing servers for attention to ask for things like napkins, a small spoon, why my hot chocolate had not arrived with our other beverages).

Personal Rating System:
My personal Taste of the food: 5  (Out of 10)
(The Chorizo let it down, also the bland butter bean stew, perhaps the hamburger was good).
Price of the food:  6  (Out of 10)
(The dishes are overpriced for the portion size on the chosen dishes, other dishes on their menu may have offered much better value).

Conclusion:
Would i dine there again?...........Probably not!
(I like to try different styles of food, but i am not a big fan of one restaurant trying to be good at all the different styles of dishes. i found this quite disappointing.
The setting, now coupled with the chosen assortment of different styles of food from around the globe, leads me to think "confusion".

I really hope you have the chance to go visit Bill's for yourself, and i would be more than happy to hear your thoughts, on your own personal dining experience there.

Until next time!...

ZIZZI Restaurant, Chichester, West Sussex. UK

Hello! And a very warm welcome, to my blog.
Today I shall be reviewing a restaurant, somewhat closer to home.

ZIZZI

Location:
This Italian styled Restaurant is in the West Sussex cathedral city of Chichester.
If you know where the Argos store is, then it should be quite easy to find.
If however you do not know, then it is in South Street, which is one of the 4 streets from the central Chichester Cross.

When you walk near the end of South Street, there are quite a few Bars, Cafes and Restaurants to choose from, among all is Zizzi.

The front look from the street is very smart and clean.

The Interior/Decor:
The Bar space, with the stairs leading to the upper floor, and the "open" Kitchen and Pizza oven cooking area.

The interior space has a "homely" feeling to it, yet also with a light twist of modern. Cosy, slightly "Shabby Chic" chairs, combine well with the unusual black and white murals, which climb over the wall and ceiling.

We wait a few moments, and eventually we are warmly greeted by a server who sounds possibly Italian, and shown to our table. (There is an choice to dine on the upper floor, but that option was closed today).

The Menu:
A good selection of dishes, and some Seafood choices to choose from too.

The Pizza section has a nice range.

Oh! And there is a Tapas section also.

Chillies!!!:
The choices sound quite appealing to me, but it seems a lot of the main courses contain chillies,
(That might sound great to you, but i am not the worlds biggest fan of chilli peppers).
I just find that when chilli peppers are used the dish is either flaming hot, or seriously far beyond what should be humanly possible to eat hot.

But, today i shall reserve judgement until the food arrives. (Lets think positive!)

We place our order, and hope for something quite authentically Italian in some small way.

The food arrives:

First to arrive is the garlic bread. (£3.95)
(It comes on a slice of wood, which is a nice touch.
It smells of garlic butter, and the taste is great, it is nice and warm, crispy shell, soft on the middle, I can taste the sea salt and the herbs. Overall it tastes really good.

Next was the Pizza (from the Bambino/Child's menu). (£6.50)

It looks like a rustic style hand made Pizza, and the size was good for a child's portion.
The smell was good, but the amount of topping was slightly disappointing, as the way it was cut meant that some sections had no toppings on.
The young person who ate this Pizza commented that the chicken was too spicy for their taste buds.

(The kids menu has a meal option which comes with 4 dough sticks, a main course, and a dessert).

Here comes the Linguine ai Gamberi. (£11.95)

This looks like it might be quite good, there are plenty of King Prawns around and enough sauce and pasta.
The prawns are nice and succulent, but seem to lack sauce flavour. (must have been steamed separately).
The Linguine pasta tasted good, whilst the sauce had a slightly sour taste (under ripe UK tomatoes).

Now, at last here is the Squid ink Linguine. (£11.50)

There is a lot of Squid on the pasta, (looks good!).
Again, the portion size seems correct, the pasta is nicely coloured with the ink.
Unfortunately however some of the squid is on the chewy side, and they have only gone and used some chilli peppers! in the sauce. I think it was too spicy for a normal palate.
Such a shame because the Linguine pasta it's self tasted good, and was nicely cooked to al dente..

Dessert:
I must pass on the dessert today, and instead order a hot chocolate, and we order 2 scoops Vanilla ice-cream for our junior diner as part of the kids menu meal.

Personal rating system:
I find it very difficult to rate the food today, as some people might enjoy their food on the slightly spicy scale, whilst others can consume extremely hot dishes.
I can say from my own personal taste today i award an 8 out of 10
And for price: 7 out of 10

Would i return in the future?......Probably... but i would order a different dish.

Many thanks for reading my post!....
